Chapter Sixteen

A few days later…

Kelly rolled over and stretched. The warm sun filtered through the blinds, splashed across her skin and invited another round of stretching. She folded her arms under her face and sighed, thoughts of Dana intruding again.

Three days.

Three whole days and not a peep.

She checked her laptop and, aside from the occasional workshop, kept to the dorms, just in case…well, just in case.

But, no.

The girl didn’t even have the decency to try and contact her to say…

Say what, exactly?

“Maybe I’m sorry?” Kelly mumbled sarcastically. “It sure would be nice.” She pressed her thumbs into her eyelids.

And an explanation would help as well.

She sat up, swung her legs off the bed. She had a class in a couple of hours and then after that? Maybe go to the observation room and watch the recordings on Ned for a bit, to see how he liked the new change in music.

An hour later with keys in hand, Kelly opened the door, startled to find Mika on the other side, her face tear-streaked, with one hand holding a small duffel-bag and the other poised to knock.

“Oh my god, Mika!” Kelly exclaimed, reaching out to curve an arm around the girl’s shoulders. “What’s wrong? What happened?”

She glanced up and down the hall before focusing back on the sobbing girl. A few other students passed by, only pausing long enough to be outright nosy. Mika, unable to speak, continued to cry. Kelly quickly brought her inside, shutting the door. She led the girl to her bed before hurrying to her wardrobe closet to grab a box of tissues. She snatched a few out and pressed them into Mika’s hand. “Honey, what’s the matter?”

She sat down next to her and waited while the young woman wiped her face and tried to calm herself down. More tears slid down the girl’s cheeks, and she swiped at them half-heartedly. Kelly grabbed a few more tissues to wipe the girl’s face with.

“Sweetheart, I can’t help you if you don’t tell me.”

“It’s P-Paolo.” Mika sniffled and pressed a soggy tissue to her nose. “We…we…b-b-broke up.” At that revelation, her face crumpled again. “He…he…doesn’t want to see meeee…”

“Oh, sweetie.” Kelly pulled the distraught girl into her arms. Mika collapsed against her, the torrent of fresh tears coming faster with each breath she took. Kelly smoothed a hand over the girl’s back as they rocked together. She pressed her cheek against the dark curls and let the poor girl cry out her heartbreak.

After a few minutes, Mike lifted her head. “Thanks, Kells.”

“Not to worry, love.” Kelly continued to rub the girl’s back. “Do you feel like talking about it?”

Mika shrugged, her fingers twisting the damp tissue. “I feel so stupid, if anything.”

“Why?”

The girl shrugged again before getting up from the bed. She wandered over to the window, parting the blinds to look outside. Kelly waited patiently as she moved to the other bed, sat on the edge and fiddled with the blanket. After a few moments, the girl looked over at her, her full lips twisted in disgust.
